Wind turbine rescue training: nacelle evacuation
Practice evacuation from the nacelle of a Vestas V80 wind turbine at Meridian Energy's White Hill wind farm. Russ from Vertical Horizons Group is the trainer, and Simon's capturing the video. The automatic descender is really simple: clip on and jump out. For extra safety during training, I'm also clipped to a second rope with a sliding ASAP fall arrester which grips and locks up if you fall too fast. The descender unit has a captured rope with carabiners at each end (as the other carabiner came up past me, it tangled a bit with the safety line). Height about 65 metres, wind speed just under 10 m/s.
