The Past Perfect tense used to describe an action in the past before another action in the past. To make the past perfect tense use 'had' with the third form of the verb. Example – I had jumped. He had gone. We had watched a movie. The structure to make the past perfect tense. 1. Interrogative sentence – - Had + subject + third form of verb. Had he played? 2. Affirmative sentence – - Subject + had + third form of verb. He had played. 3. Negative sentence – - Subject + had + not + third form of verb. He had not played. Some more examples to understand. When we arrived, the train had left. When the police arrived, the thief had escaped. I came here after you had left. Had you come to the program before I came? He had passed his MBA in 2010. I called his office but he had already left. I had played with a ball. The boss had said it would be a long day.
