The Labrador Retriever is a British breed of retriever gun dog. It was bred by Lord John Scott in 1830s and named after the Labrador region of colony Newfoundland (now a province of Canada). It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the Western world. Labradors are powerful and indefatigable swimmers noted for their ability to tolerate the coldest of water for extended periods of time. Their ability to work quietly alongside hunters while watching for birds to fall from the sky, marking where they land and then using their outstanding nose to find and retrieve dead or wounded birds has made them the king of waterfowl retrievers. The Labrador is loyal, obedient and playful. It was bred as a sporting and hunting dog but is widely kept as a companion dog. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog, or for rescue or therapy work. Number of Labradors have also been taught to assist their owner in removing money and credit cards from ATMs with prior training. Labradors have been used as war dogs. During the Vietnam War they were used as scout dogs to track down dead or wounded soldiers or enemy positions. The breed is used in water rescue/lifesaving. It continues in that role today. It's likely you've met at least one Lab in your life, as they have long reigned as America's most popular dog breed. They've won the dog personality popularity contest for so many years, as Labs are devoted to their owners—always willing to show you their affection and receive your adoration in return—are highly intelligent, and are happiest doing any and all family activities. Their enthusiasm not only makes them fun to be around, but also makes them a hard-working breed. Labs are companionable, bonding with all family members, and famously friendly to every person and pup they meet. While they have high energy and require lots of activity, they are eager to please and highly trainable. Labrador Retrievers've also got OTHER TRAITS: easy to train easy to groom tendency to chew prone to health issues high potential for weight gain loves water cold weather tolerant hot weather tolerant good for first-time pet owners strong loyalty tendencies good hiking companion Your children are the apple of your eye, but so is your Labrador. Bring a Labrador home without any hesitation if you want a loyal, watchful, and intelligent companion to grow up with your child. Once you quickly train your lab to look after your children and teach your kids to be polite and friendly with the dog, you will then have memorable days of a complete and happy family.
