Thousands of infected computers to lose internet access

Thousands of people around the world could lose internet access if they failed to remove malicious software installed on their computers more than a year ago. The malware, referred to as DNSChanger, would alter a computer's DNS settings so that web requests that would normally go to a domain name server would instead be routed to a rogue server set up by Estonian company Rove Digital. From there, the web traffic would be sent to destinations designated by Rove. The FBI shut down the operation. In order to keep infected computers online, the agency replaced the Rove servers with servers of its own. These FBI servers were shut off at 12:01 am EDT Monday, which means that any remaining infected computers can no longer access the internet. Infected computers can no longer access proper domain name servers, nor can they access the temporary FBI servers.
