Since Monarchs in Central and South Florida are not part of the migratory population (they stay here year round), they need a food source for their caterpillars. The only Florida native milkweed that does not die back in late fall/winter is Asclepius perennis (aquatic milkweed). If you have experience with this milkweed, you know that it will not feed a lot of caterpillars. Which is why the use of non-native milkweeds is more common here and even more so in South Florida.
