It is commonly referred to as the Archduke Trio, because it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, the youngest of twelve children of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and a patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven. Beethoven dedicated a total of fourteen compositions to the Archduke, who dedicated one of his own to Beethoven in return. The trio was written late in Beethoven's so-called "middle period". He began composing it in the summer of 1810, and completed it in March 1811. The Fidelio Trio is set to embark on a comprehensive tour of the United States this February. The trio, comprising Darragh Morgan on violin, Tim Gill on cello, and Mary Dullea on piano, is renowned for their regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, RTÉ Lyric FM, and WQXR, and have been the subject of a Sky Arts documentary. Having made their debut at London’s Southbank Centre, the Fidelio Trio has performed on stages worldwide, including the Wigmore Hall and Kings Place in London, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre, and venues across Paris, Venice, Florence, and several cities in the USA such as New York City, San Francisco, and Boston. The trio's discography is extensive and acclaimed, featuring a Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice and premiere recordings of compositions by Gerald Barry on Mode Records. Their repertoire spans works by Philip Glass, Ravel, Saint-Saëns, Fauré, Chausson, Satie, Korngold, and Schoenberg, showcasing their versatility and dedication to both classical and contemporary chamber music. The upcoming USA tour, spanning from the 17th to the 28th of February, includes performances in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Iowa City, Newport, Boston, New York City, and Ithaca.
