Enslavement, Resistance, and Religion on Staten Island

with Guest Speaker Rev. Dr. George McClain and guest musician Ashley Renee Watkins Little attention has been given to the history of enslavement on Staten Island. Yet much of the development of Staten Island in its pre-Revolutionary years rested on the shoulders of enslaved Black persons. This presentation will begin to give due attention to this part of our Island heritage. Rev. Dr. George McClain researched the announced topic as the John J. Marchi Visiting Scholar at the College of Staten Island, 2018-20. George found inspiration for his life-long ministry in his participation in the 1964-65 Civil Rights Movement in Alabama and Mississippi and served as a Methodist social action executive for 25 years.
