Banele Khoza, geboren 1994 in Swasiland, ist ein bildender Künstler mit einem Bachelor of Technology in Fine Arts von der Tswane University of Technology in Pretoria. 2017 gewann er den rennomierten Gerard Sekoto Award und den damit einhergehenden Aufenthalt in der Cité International des Arts in Paris. Khozas figurative Abstraktion sind farbenfrohe männliche Porträts und Akte: geisterhafte, romantische und traumähnliche Bilder, grundiert von einem homoerotischen Verlangen, in das sich Gefühle von Verwundbarkeit und Unvollständigkeit mischen. Seine Einzelausstellungen umfassen u.a. »Lonely Nights« bei Lizamore & Associates (2017), »Temporary Feelings« im Pretoria Art Museum (2016) und »LOVE?« in der Smith Gallery (2018). 2018 war Khoza mit »LGBTQI+ Banele Khoza« Teil des Curatorial Lab des Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town. In 2017, he won the prestigious Gerard Sekoto Award and the accompanying residency at the Cité International des Arts in Paris. Khoza's figurative abstractions are colorful male portraits and nudes: ghostly, romantic, and dream-like images grounded by a homoerotic desire that mingles with feelings of vulnerability and incompleteness. His solo exhibitions include "Lonely Nights" at Lizamore & Associates (2017), "Temporary Feelings" at the Pretoria Art Museum (2016), and "LOVE?" at Smith Gallery (2018). In 2018, Khoza was part of the Curatorial Lab at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Cape Town with "LGBTQI+ Banele Khoza." Gruppenausstellung »Aus Südafrika« 19. Februar 2022 – 1. South African art has undergone a major transformation in recent decades as a result of the transition from an authoritarian apartheid regime to a democracy elected in 1994. With works by Santu Mofokeng, William Kentridge, and Banele Khoza, the exhibition at the Kunsthaus provides insight into the various facets of current South African art.
