Roberto Mancini has received lots of plaudits for the way in which his Italy team played during the road to winning the European Championship in 2021. Entertaining both on and off the ball, Italy would always look to play out from the back; valuing possession at every step and looking to tire out the opposition chasing after both them and the ball. They work the ball through the thirds, which is made easier by having exceptionally talented technicians like Marco Verratti and Manuel Locatelli in midfield - and eventually look to work the ball into the box via cutting inside and balls in behind or cutting the ball back from the by-line.
