Replace Stolen State Historical Plaque #162 - Site of Mokelumne City
The California Landmark Foundation is raising money to replace the California Historical Landmark plaque for Mokelumne City in San Joaquin County. https://www.facebook.com/donate/455401840084596/ Mokelumne City was established in 1850 and was named after the river that brought it life. Mokelumne City had a year around deep-water connection with San Francisco, the only other town that shared that advantage at the time was Stockton. Mokelumne City grew to become the second largest town in the county and the future looked bright. The great flood of 1862 changed everything; the town was wiped off the map. Most of the houses and buildings floated away in eight feet of flood water and the few buildings that were left were finished off by devastating waves and wind. The same river that brought the town life, took it away. Mokelumne City was ruined and was never rebuilt. The only reminder of the town was a plaque that was stolen years ago, leaving the site without a voice and identity.
