Jazz album episode 58 - Lyle Mays 'Eberhard' review

#LyleMays #Eberhard Welcome to another edition of the jazz album reviews series and today i am going to be taking a look at another 2021 release from one of the greatest and most underrated musicians of all time, pianist, keyboardist and composer Lyle May who sadly passed aways on February 10 2020 after a long battle with illness, this is latest recording called 'Eberhard' which features a 13 minute track dedicated to legendary bassist Eberhard Weber. Lyle Mays of course is best known for his long association as one half of perhaps the greatest songwriting writing team of all time since Paul McCarthny and John Lennon of himself and Pat Metheny as part of PMG for which Lyle Mays was a member of from 1977 - 2010 and played a big role in the sound & writing of the music Eberhard Weber and Lyle Mays together on Pat Metheny's Watercolors album in 1977 and Lyle Mays would player on Eberhard Weber's 'Later That Evening' in 1982. 'Eberhard' was recorded in 2019 shortly before Lyle's passing and features a total of 15 musicians comprised of longtime friend and PMG bassist Steve Rodby, Bill Frisell who played on the first two Lyle Mays recordings back in 1985 - 1988, saxophonist Bob Shepherd who was a member of the Lyle Mays Quartet back in the 90s, Jimmy Johnson, Mitchel Forman, Alex Acuna to name a few including a string orchestra. The music as you would expect from a musician the calibre of Lyle Mays is very mellow, haunting, laidback and very beautiful which has all of the hallmarks and trademark that we have to come to know him for. If this is the final gift that Lyle Mays has left us then i can't think of a better and more higher note to go out than this. A strong contender for album of 2021 For a future edition fo this series, i will be taking a special look at the solo catalogue of Lyle Mays, so make sure you don't miss that. Thank you Lyle Mays for this final gift you have left us and for all of the great music you have given. May you rest in peace.
