Home User Set Up Tips for s3900-24T4S Switch

I threw together a quick video to describe one way to set up an s3900-24T4S managed switch from FS.com. Sorry for the poor quality. Old laptop and old brain. My thoughts were all over the place and I took longer than I thought to capture my points. I was frustrated with setting up this switch and I thought it would be helpful for other home users (not IT or network admins) to understand the set up process for this kind of product marketed to SMB and enterprise environments. Here's the cheat sheet, but you must download the web GUI and CLI docs as you will need them to do the following tasks. 1 - get a laptop or PC, take it off your home network, give it an IP address of 192.168.1.5, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 2 - connect and power up the switch, connect a lan cable to the management port to your laptop\PC, connect to 192.168.1.1 with putty. Username and password is admin\admin. Remember to change that later. 3 - create an IP interface on VLAN1, which exists by default. Give it an IP that is NOT the same as the mgmt port subnet, so do not use any 192.168.1.0/24 address. Give it a default gateway. 4 - now the switch can be managed by the new IP on the other ports. If you plan ahead you can change the management port IP first to something not in use and non-routable on your home network, then add the desired IP as an interface on VLAN1 for management. All of the commands to do the tasks are in the docs you download. All of the steps are command line, unfortunately. But do it once and you will be set.
