Dec 21, 2025 Christmas in England’s Prettiest Village – Castle Combe, Wiltshire Join me for a peaceful winter afternoon walk through Castle Combe, often described as England’s prettiest village. Filmed around 4:00 PM, this walk captures the soft fading light of late afternoon, Christmas touches around the village and the timeless beauty of one of England’s most photographed locations. Stone cottages glow as daylight fades, the Bybrook stream gently winds through the village and the calm atmosphere makes this a perfect walk to relax and unwind. Castle Combe is a historic village in Wiltshire, set within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Its origins date back to Roman times, when the nearby Fosse Way passed close by and the village later grew during the medieval period. The name “Castle Combe” comes from a Norman castle that once stood above the village, overlooking the valley. Although the castle itself no longer remains, the village below flourished as a centre for wool production during the Middle Ages - an industry that brought wealth to much of the Cotswolds. At the heart of the village is St Andrew’s Church, parts of which date back to the 13th century. Unlike many villages, Castle Combe has remained largely untouched by modern development. There are no streetlights or modern shopfronts in the centre, helping preserve its authentic medieval layout. Its stone cottages, narrow lanes and riverside setting have made it a popular filming location for period dramas and films over the years. In winter, and especially around Christmas, Castle Combe feels even more magical, quiet, atmospheric and timeless, as though the village has stepped out of another era.
