Where did Cricket come from?

In the last couple of weeks the world of sport has been rocked by allegations, even confessions of the Australian cricket team tampering with the ball in a match with South Africa. In this video we'll look at the the origins of the sport of cricket and the name itself. So where did the name cricket come from Well for many years the name and the sport appeared to have originated in Saxon or Norman times by children living in the Weald in England. The Saxons where a group of Germanic tribes of what is now Germany who settled in England in the middle ages. The Normans were people from what is Normandy in France who also migrated to England around the time of the Norman conquest in the latter part of the 11th century. The Weald is an area of South East England and it was here that the name and the sport seems to have been used first. A number of words are thought to be possible sources for the term "cricket". The name may have been derived from the Middle Dutch krick(-e), meaning a stick; or the Old English cricc or cryce meaning a crutch or staff. Another possible source is the Middle Dutch word krickstoel, meaning a long low stool used for kneeling in church and which resembled the long low wicket with two stumps used in early cricket.
