Mythologies of Command: A Comparison of Northen and Southen Generalship

Note: The recording began approximately 2 minutes after the speaker began talking In discussions of the Civil War, an idea persists that while the North enjoyed all the material advantages, the South had more talented leadership. This presentation examines that notion and compares the men who held general officer rank in the Union and Confederate armies. The fact is that both armies had proportionate examples of genius, incompetence, mediocrity, and outright stupidity in their leadership throughout the war, and some of the individuals who we will discuss were very noteworthy for all the wrong reasons. John Haymond is an award-winning historian who researches and publishes in the fields of conflict history and military legal history. He is the author of three books and numerous articles in the fields of military history and the history of military law. He currently resides in Southern California and dreams of moving back to Minnesota, his adopted state.
