También es el último juego de la serie en tener un lanzamiento de arcade. Eurocom (que anteriormente había desarrollado laversión Sega Saturn de Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 ) más tarde la portó a la PlayStation , Nintendo 64 ,PC , y Game Boy Color durante 1998. Una versión actualizada titulada Mortal Kombat Gold fue lanzada exclusivamente para Dreamcast el año siguiente. El sistema de juego de Mortal Kombat 4 es similar al de los juegos anteriores; Una de las adiciones más notables es el uso de armas y objetos durante las peleas. La historia narra el ataque del corrupto Elder God Shinnok contra sus antiguos compañeros que lo atraparon en el Netherealm muchos años antes del comienzo de la serie. Los otros 17 personajes jugables participan en la batalla entre el bien y el mal, con las fuerzas de la luz tratando de evitar que Shinnok y las fuerzas de la oscuridad conquisten todos los reinos. Durante el desarrollo del juego, el personal de Midway tuvo problemas para hacer los gráficos, ya que fue uno de los primeros juegos de lucha en 3D que desarrollaron.
