Crysis benchmark Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10 - Q6600, HD 3870

Which OS do you prefer? On an older system, which Windows OS can give you the best performance? I decided to do a quick test using Crysis, and included Unigine Valley as a static benchmark, to see if the performance difference was really noticeable. Unigine Valley being static, the results are pretty much repeatable, so the benchmark was only run once. Crysis was run in DX9 on XP, and the max resolution it would allow me to set was 1440 x 900, so that is the resolution used for all the OS'es, but DX10 was used from Vista on up, with the high preset, vsync on, motion blur off. The benchmark figures at the end were an average of 3 runs, 2 shorter runs of about 7 minutes, and a 15 minute run. While it is not a perfect static benchmark, I tried to keep the activity as similiar as I could throughout each run. Keep an eye on the FPS and the frametime graph in the gameplay capture, it pretty much tells the story. The system used is a Dell XPS 410, Core 2 quad Q6600 @ 2.4ghz, 4gb's DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 3870 512mb GPU, Operating systems were installed on a 256gb SSD, Crysis was installed on a 7200 RPM Seagate barracuda drive. The latest radeon beta driver, 13.4 was used throughout. While these results may not be the same for every game, it does make sense that operating systems with lower overhead will perform better, but that of course comes with it's own set of issues. Windows XP SP3 Windows Vista SP1 (sp2 would not finish installing) Windows 7 SP1 Windows 8.1 Windows 10 Enterprise 2019 LTSC Check out the daily deals on Newegg!
