Alistair Reid plays Schumann's Fugue No. 2 on BACH, Westminster Abbey

For more information visit: www.AlistairReid.org. Six Fugues on the Name BACH (Op. 60) II. Lebhaft, by Robert Schumann. From an organ recital given in Westminster Abbey on November 7th, 2010. The Six Fugues were written for organ or pedal piano and are based on the four notes B-A-C-H (B flat, A, C, B natural). In German musical nomenclature, in which the note B natural is written as H, it forms Johann Sebastian Bach's family name. One of the most frequently occurring examples of a musical cryptogram, the motif has been used by countless composers, especially after the Bach Revival in the first half of the 19th century. Listen out for the motif as it is repeated, inverted, augmented, and developed throughout the piece.
