Hidden Shelter: Insulated Scout Pit (Full-Length Version)
This thing is more than just a hole in the ground. It is debris-insulated, which means that it should keep you relatively warm even in the wintertime as long as you are wearing winter clothing. Temperatures underground are pretty constant year-round. In this particular area, it will be 8-10 C or about 50 F. Normally, these would be built to keep you hidden on your journey through hostile territory in case you had no choice but to spend the night. It is also great to store a cache of supplies. The way this is built, it is very sturdy. Once the dirt settled, you could stand on top of and not know that it was there. The roof has no give. I did my best to restore the immediate area to blend in with its environment. After that, it only took a couple of rainy days before all before the area was restored to the baseline. I was pretty proud of the way I came up with doing the doorway, but it will need to be improved. It does leak. It does not, however, leak anywhere else inside. There are several inches of debris and dirt on top, and it must just get absorbed.
