Saint-Saëns: Variations on a Theme of Beethoven, Op. 35 Ethel Bartlett and Rae Robertson, duo-pianists Recorded on July 22, 1932, presumably in Abbey Road Studios, London, on Gramophone Company 78-rpm matrices 2B3281 through 2B3284. Issued in December, 1932, as HMV C 2483 and C 2484. The theme is taken from Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 18 in E-Flat, Op. 31, No. 3; specifically, the Trio section of the third movement (Menuetto). There is a hint of another great sonata from the same opus, the opening of the "Tempest" Sonata (Op. 31, No. 2), in Saint-Saëns' introduction, with its arpeggios rolling up the keyboard in different keys.
