George Whalley (1915-83) was an eminent and accomplished Canadian man of letters: scholar, poet, naval officer and secret intelligence agent during World War II, leading expert on the writings of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, CBC script-writer and broadcaster, musician, biographer, translator of Aristotle, and president of the Kingston symphony. He served in the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve (1940-56) and was on active duty in the Royal Navy (1940-45). He taught English at Queen's University (1950-80). Informed by a life intersecting with important historical events and constant intellectual inquiry, Whalley's remarkable range of work ranks him with great Canadian thinkers such as George Grant and Northrop Frye. The Complete Poems of George Whalley was published in 2016 by McGill-Queen's University Press and contains all of Whalley's wartime poems. A conference in honour of George Whalley was held at Queen's University (Kingston, Ontario), 24-26 July 2015. Read the conference proceedings here: http://georgewhalley.ca/gwps/
