tsunami warning broadcast California (scanner audio 03-11-11)

Recorded from my police scanner. Tsunami warning broadcast for Humboldt County (City of Eureka), California. One of many warnings, this one was broadcasted at 7:30am on Friday March 11, 2011 shortly after the first tsunami waves hit the coast. Thousands of North Coast residents evacuated their homes ahead of surging waters generated by Japan's 8.9-magnitude earthquake. The first wave hit the coast around 7:30am, with surges continuing throughout the day. Waves peaked in the Crescent City Harbor at 8.1 feet around 8:45am. Northern California and Southern Oregon bore the brunt of the tsunami. Waves caused extensive damage to the ports in both Brookings and Crescent City. Pilings, portions of floating docks and other material jammed the harbor. Continuing surges turned the debris into battering rams, holing boats and creating a hazard for crews attempting to secure them. Several boats had sunk and dozens of them were damaged. North of Crescent City three people were swept off a beach. Two of them were able to get safely back to shore but the third, a 25-year-old man, was lost at sea and presumed dead. In Brookings people trying to secure a commercial fishing boat discovered a man's body inside. The Sheriff's department is investigating. In Myer's Creek Four people were swept off a beach. All were able to make it back to shore, and only minor injuries were reported. Sea lions seemed unfazed by the chaos around them. In fact, they appeared to enjoy riding the swirling, debris-clogged currents.
