They usually delay incoming signal slightly and utilise LFO (low frequency oscillator) to modulate/vary delayed version of signal. This video explores some of Logic Pro's modulation effects - Chorus, Ensemble, Flanger, Phaser and Ringshifter. When using modulation effects, watch out for phase cancellation - when two or more waves are out of phase with each other and cause reduction in volume. It is good idea to listen to mix in mono to check for phase issues: - Insert Utility plugin on Stereo Out track - Turn on Mono switch - Make sure that there is no sound disappearing In addition, following third-party plugins are great free tools to check for presence of out-of-phase elements in mix.
