FRANCE, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie: One of MOST FAVORITE VILLAGE

SAINT-CIRQ-LAPOPIE Welcome to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie! Voted France most favortite village! Saint-Cirq-Lapopie’s medieval history is deeply tied to its strategic location and role as a fortified stronghold. Perched on a cliff 100 meters above the Lot River, the village provided natural defenses and control over the trade routes along the river. Its advantageous position made it a coveted site during the turbulent Middle Ages, particularly during the Hundred Years' War, when it was contested by both French and English forces. Governed by powerful noble families, including the Lapopie, Gourdon, and Cardaillac clans, the village thrived as a center of feudal power. These families fortified the village with walls, gates, and a castle, ensuring its resilience against invaders. The Church of Saint-Cirq, built in the 12th century, served as both a spiritual and social hub, attracting pilgrims traveling the Santiago de Compostela routes and reinforcing the village's religious significance. Economically, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie prospered during the medieval period through craftsmanship and trade. Local artisans were renowned for their production of barrel staves, essential for the wine trade, as well as leatherworking and tanning. The Lot River facilitated transport and commerce, linking the village to broader markets and contributing to its wealth and influence. Despite periods of decline caused by wars and invasions, the village retained much of its medieval charm and infrastructure. Its narrow, winding streets, half-timbered houses, and stone buildings offer a vivid glimpse into its storied past. Today, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie stands as a remarkably preserved example of a medieval hilltop village, reflecting the architectural and cultural heritage of the Middle Ages. Saint-Cirq-Lapopie has been classified as "Les plus beaux villages de France".
