Interview With an NHL Hero Episode 3: Levente Szuper
For the third episode of our exciting series of goalie interviews, we have a very special guest. Levente Szuper was born in Budapest, Hungary on June 11, 1980. The younger of two brothers, he took up hockey at the age of 5 and never looked back as he was eventually drafted into the NHL 116th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2000 Entry Draft. The first ever Hungarian native to be on an NHL active roster, Szuper dressed for the Calgary Flames 8 times as the back-up to Jamie McLennan in 2002-03 and played 11 total seasons of pro hockey across the world including the NHL, AHL, ECHL, CHL, DEL, Italy, and Kazakhstan. He is both a Memorial Cup and Calder Cup winning goalie, on top of being a DEL champ with the Hannover Scorpions in 2009-10. He has worked tirelessly to promote hockey in Hungary and has played countless matches for their men's national hockey team, even leading Hungary into the Championship Division of the 2009 IIHF World Championships, the first time Hungary had made it to that level since the 1940s. There, Hungary was placed into a group with Canada, Belarus, and Slovakia. Married with two children, Mr. Szuper retired from play in 2013, and has since been active with Hungarian hockey currently serving as the goaltending coach for the Vasas HC!
