Tailleferre - Concerto for Piano and orchestra

Germaine Tailleferre Concerto for Piano and orchestra (piano reduction) Maciej Granat - piano Jonathan Plowright - piano I Allegro 00:10 II Adagio 05:25 III Finale - Allegro non troppo 10:09 The early 1920s were very successful for Germaine in the artistic field. Her first Violin Sonata, written for a French virtuoso violinist -- Jacques Thibaud, was premiered in 1922 by Thibaud himself and, on the piano another huge French name of the time, Alfred Cortot. Her ballet 'Le Marchand d'Oiseaux' was a great success with the Ballets Suédois. Shortly after, a high profile commission came from the Princess Edmond de Polignac for a piano concerto in the same, neo-classical style as the acclaimed ballet. The score was finished in January 1924 and the Concerto was premiered by Alfred Cortot to wide acclaim. The Piano Concerto is a very tight piece when it comes to form and its neo-classical style is clearly influenced by Bach's music. In the outer movements the lack of strong melodic material is well balanced by the bustling score, the constant movement in both, the soloist's and orchestra's, parts. The rapid and achingly optimistic ideas swirl between the instruments in a high-class and high-energy baroque concept of concerto grosso. The second movement brings a rather short but deeply intricate emotional monologue. (notes by Maciej Granat) recorded during the Germaine Tailleferre Anniversary Concert at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Guinness Room 18/04/2012 please visit: www.m-granat.co.uk Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/maciej.granat.pianist.and.composer/
