Innovation, Inspiration, Infrastructure: 3 Keys for rethinking education | Rafael Parente | TEDxWBG

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Rafael tells the story of launching a new open education platform, Educopédia, in Rio de Janiero. The challenges and successes of the program, and how it changed one boy's life. Rafael Parente has a master’s degree in education from PACE University and is a PhD in international education development from New York University. He is the director of LABi, a laboratory of educational innovation, he assists the movement Todos pela Educação (http://www.todospelaeducacao. org.br/) in matters related to innovation, he is the general coordinator of GELP Brasil (gelponline.org), and he was the deputy secretary in charge of innovation at the Municipal Secretariat of Education of Rio de Janeiro from 2009 to 2013. During this period, he idealized and implemented innovative programs and concepts such as Educopédia (platform of digital classes - www.educopedia.com.br), Pé de Vento (mash-up of literacy course, games, and ebook), Rioeduca (a portal for the exchange of best practices—www.rioeduca.net), and GENTE (a new model of school that centralizes the learning process gente.rioeduca.net). About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
