Elmsly cello 2022: Kaddisch
This cello model is loosely based on the Mara Stradivari of 1711, with a slightly shortened middle bout to give an easier stop length, and a little bit widened. (Published pictures and measurements don't quite match in any case). I used a dark varnish applied very thin over a slaked plaster ground, finishing straight off the brush, with no polishing and no polishing layer. I heard a Wigmore Hall concert where Steven Isserlis played this, dedicating his performance to a young violinist who had just died. It was so moving. Later in 2021 when Anna, the mother of someone I had been close to died, a brief retelling of her thoughts nearing death led me to explore this Kaddisch.
