Resident Evil 4 HD Project Part 3

Part 3. Prior to this playthrough I would have said that I hated Resident Evil 4, that opinion has definitely changed. I no longer hate this game but it is an extremely flawed experience. There is absolutely no denying that the controls of this game are awful. They work and the over-the-shoulder aiming is actually really cool. But you have a fully 3d rendered world and yet you still have tank controls and to top it all of there is no way to move while shooting which makes for some tough situations. They really needed to provide a way to get out of situations. Some sort of doge roll, a shoulder charge, something that helped you out when you got surrounded and it is easy to get overwhelmed. The beginning of this game is not great especially when you're still trying to figure out the new awkward mechanics. By the time I got to the castle things started to feel better. I never felt great in the game even by the end, but after a while I surprised myself and I actually started to enjoy the game. It's silly and over the top in some insanely over the top ways. Which is also a pretty big complaint as well. The game wants to be serious but at the same time has horrendously silly characters like Ramon Salazar who is just Pilaf from Dragon Ball. The bosses are cool and really wild. Maybe not so much Krauser, that was a lot of dumb. I did love exploring and finding as many secrets as possible to get all that shiny monies. I loved the upgrade system and constantly upgrading and getting new weapons, expanding the inventory and even the item management. Nothing worse than leaving items behind and knowing you may never be able to get them again when you leave an area. Most of the game was fun to explore, but I do miss the more "open-ness" of the prior games. RE4 feels and plays too linear. This game feels like a natural progression of the series and a step in the right direction. Each iteration of RE before this was adding more enemies and more action, that going full on action game was inevitable. I do miss my survivor horror though. The story is a bit silly and the dialogue is something straight out of a drive-in midnight schlock movie. It can be awful at times and charming in others. The game is also way too long, there is a lot of just meaningless areas that don't really add anything to the experience other than padding. I enjoyed the mini-games and the small side-quests. Fortunately you do not have to drag Ashley around for too long and most of those escort areas are relatively short. She spends most of the game kidnapped and that is just fine. I did really appreciate the Ada content because it adds some interest to the story and her perspective. I wish there was something for Louis as well. Her sections play very close to Leon's and she largely goes to the same places. It makes sense but I do wish there were some changes to the places you visit rather than being just the same places Leon traveled through. I also played with the RE4HD mod which was freaking gorgeous. I don't really know what the OG graphics are supposed to look like but these remastered ones are quite well done. At the end of the day I will happily say that I liked this game way more than I thought I would have. I genuinely believed it was going to be a hair pulling experience and it turned into a fun time. I can see why people care for this game and the influence this game has had in evolving games as a whole. Yet, this game is not a masterpiece by any means. Is it fun? For sure. Yet, it is still mired by questionable game design decisions and for those reasons it just cannot be. The simple fact that they do not allow you to move while shooting is an oversight that I just cannot overlook. There is no good reason for it other than you couldn't in prior games, but by that logic there should be many other things left over as well that just aren't and are improved upon. My mind has been changed and I am happy for that. Enjoy my blind playthrough. The HD mod: https://www.re4hd.com/ You can find my Twitch channel here: https://www.twitch.tv/cereal_ki11ah
