Robert the Bruce and John ‘Red’ Comyn Clash in Peebles

This video explores the possible locations in the border town of Peebles where a council of the Scot’s nobles met. The year is AD 1299. An English spy notes that the meeting became heated and John ‘Red’ Comyn attacked Robert the Bruce. In the company of Robert Bruce was Malcolm Wallace, brother to William Wallace. An argument reached boiling point when daggers were drawn when a knight from the Comyn contingent demanded that the lands and goods of William Wallace be surrendered as he was planning to leave the country to meet with the French King Philip IV, without the council’s permission. The Earl of Buchan also turned on Bishop Lamberton, a close associate of Bruce. What is clear is that no love was lost between Comyn and Bruce, and this event would carve the way in their enmity for each other over the years until 1306 when it came to a head in Greyfriar’s Church, Dumfries.
