The Luftwaffe attempted to gain air superiority over the skies of Britain, before the seaborne invasion of Britain could commence. The RAF suffered many handicaps prior to the battle. However, these handicaps were overcome by an innovative air defense system that became the envy of the world. The RAF suffered a bloody nose in the battle of France. Many experienced pilots and planes were lost. Air Marshall Hugh Dowding made the difficult recommendation to halt supporting the French Air Force after Dunkirk. Many French, never forgave the RAF and Britain for what they perceived as a selfish act. The defense of Britain was based on several innovative ideas and technology. RADAR would provide advance warning of air raids to the air defense network. Air controllers could vector or disperse RAF fighters to the interception. Fighters gained valuable minutes in gaining altitude above defending formations. Attacking from above was critical in the pre-jet engine age. Both short range (AMES Type 1) and long range (AMES Type 2) were developed prior to the battle of Britain. The Observer Corps played a critical role spotting the type, the estimated number and composition of an air attack. If RADAR was knocked out in a certain sector the Observer Corps could fill the gap. The breaking of the ENGIMA code machine was critical in the Battle of Britain. The Luftwaffes cipher was the first Whermacht cipher broken by the British SIS. The Luftwaffes strategy, morale and difficulties in the Battle of Britain were known to Dowding during the battle. The main German air formation during the battle was Luftflotte 2 (Air Fleet 2) and was commanded by Generalfeldmarshall (Field Marshall) Albert Kesselring. Kesselrings objective was to lure the RAF into battle, and destroy them. The initial phase was successful. The RAF was desperately short of pilots and worn out. However, at the crucial time, Hitler and Goring interfered. Both decided to attack London and: Bring England to her knees.
