From my library: A Harvard Classics edition of Two Years Before the Mast, by Richard Henry Dana. Dana served on board a merchant sailing ship, and gives an amazing and thoughtful account of what he saw. He went on to be a lawyer and a huge advocate for the rights of sailors.
