Holland Land Office Museum Guest Speaker Series: Derrick Pratt, “Erie Canal & Underground Railroad”

The Holland Land Office Museum welcomed as the next speaker in its Guest Speaker Series, Derrick Pratt of the Erie Canal Museum on June 8, 2022. His presentation, “Pathways of Resistance: The Erie Canal & Abolition Movement” detailed the importance of the Erie Canal and its flow across New York State to the abolitionist movement. This history includes the abolition of slavery in New York eventually by 1827 and the growth of the movement leading up to the Civil War. While, the canal was not necessarily the mode of travel for escaped slaves fleeing to Canada, the many communities along it became hotbeds for the fight against slavery and the support of enslaved peoples. Major cities like Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo, all along the canal, became centers of the abolitionist movement. The Guest Speaker Series is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART!
