Michael Göring – Germany and the Migration Crisis
Europe is facing a refugee crisis, and Germany has opened its doors to people fleeing the war in Syria and rippling effects of the crisis in surrounding Mideast nations. As the EU's economic leader, Germany has the capacity to support large numbers of refugees but the current influx is virtually unprecedented in modern history. Germany is a member of the open transit between the member countries. The strength of Germany's economy and relatively generous benefits systems has made it a popular destination for many refugees. Many Germans have welcomed refugees to their country: there has been a huge outpouring of support in Germany, with volunteers helping distribute food, translate documents, and donate basic items and clothing. However, recent incidents involving attacks on German citizens by refugees, combined with a slowing of Germany's economic growth have sparked criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel, leading to the lowest approval ratings of her tenure. Michael Göring is the chairman of the board of the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin and Gerd Bucerius
