The Power of Diegetic UI
The user interface is your lifeline while playing a game. It holds your hand, gives you information, and guides you to the next objective. It keeps you going, and encourages you to progress. But at the same time, the user interface ruins a lot of the magic that games have. For each element of the HUD you remove, you have to rely more on instinct, intuition, creativity, and curiosity. Something as simple as taking away the minimap in the Witcher forces you to listen to NPCs as they explain the backstory behind quests, and will instantly make you start to notice landmarks with genuine fascination. Taking away the combat warnings in Assassin’s Creed and the new Lord of the Rings games will force you to watch your enemies intently, and make combat a thousand times more rewarding. And games like Red Dead Redemption 2 take it to a whole ‘nother level. If you disable the HUD in Read Dead, NPCs will start to use more detail when describing where to go. You no longer have a helping hand. You’re on your own in the wild. Aesthetically, there’s nothing telling you that it’s a game.
