Complete with a profusion of maps, virtually all with original hand color (flag plate is color lithographed). An uncommon year. Period 1/4 leather binding, smooth spine, gilt bands, gilt title lettering, embossed cover designs, all edges gilt. Book and binding is physically old and shows some signs of handling and time. The atlas is not new or in "new" condition. Binding age worn, leather rubbed , scuffed and splitting at joint ends but still supple, top of spine chipped, covers loosened from atlas text block, but overall the atlas remains clean and attractive as an object. Text block paper is gently toned, paper is supple and not the typical brittle paper found in Johnson atlases of the 1860's. internally still well preserved, tight, sound, most maps fresh in appearance with virtually no spitting along fold lines. Still attractive on the shelf. Book displays a pleasing and unique age patina and is in nice antiquarian condition, any age flaws easy to overlook or forgive.
