Coil Whine on Asus GTX 670 Direct CU II 2GB GDDR5
Originally uploaded for ASUS Tech Support to help investigate an issue with coil whine on my GTX670. Their tech support however is absolutely terrible! Their response to all of my questions was "The retailer has to legally assist the customer, as they are the place of purchase.". Completely useless. To be fair though, the card itself, other than when it's making this horrible noise in some scenario's is otherwise very good. I'm making the video public now as it seems to have helped a few people in terms of offering a potential partial workaround at least, by enabling Vsync in older games to cap the maximum FPS. (Original Background Provided to ASUS below) I bought my ASUS GTX 670 about a month ago and have started to notice a very high pitch screeching sound every so often. I have narrowed this down to the GFX card and have identified a scenario which invokes this screeching noise (coil whine?) as shown in the video. The noise appears to only be present when playing games at high FPS (frames per second) and during the menu and loading screens etc. If I turn "VSYNC" on to limit the FPS, then the noise usually goes away. I play a lot of older games which have low system requirements and as such this noise is unbearable and totally ruining my experience. To further confirm that the noise is indeed coming from the card, I also carried out a number of tests (games and Windows Experience Index) without the GFX card in the system (i.e. running off Intel HD4000). There was no coil whine at all. With the card in... horrible piercing noises. Having spent months researching parts to custom build my machine to be very low noise / practically silent, and having chosen the Asus GTX 670 to complement this based on the claim from Asus that "ASUS GTX 670 DirectCU II: coolest and quietest 28nm card".
